Svend Hammershøi (1873–1948) was a Danish artist and ceramicist, best known for his long-standing collaboration with Kähler in Næstved. He was the brother of the painter Vilhelm Hammershøi and shared a similar sense of calm and atmospheric aesthetics. Starting at Kähler in 1893, Svend Hammershøi played a key role in shaping the studio’s artistic identity.
He explored both form and glaze, creating ceramics with deep vertical grooves, classical shapes, and refined surfaces. One of his most distinctive innovations was the grey-black double glaze, which gave his works a unique depth and tactile richness. This technique involved two layers of glaze—typically a light, matte base with a dark, semi-transparent top layer—resulting in a dynamic interplay of light and texture.
Today, Hammershøi’s ceramics are regarded as masterpieces of Danish design and have greatly influenced both his contemporaries and modern ceramicists.
